NSE, Andhra Pradesh govt sign MoU to fuel growth of MSMEs


  • Top stock exchange NSE on Tuesday inked a pact with Andhra Pradesh government to help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state to raise capital through listing on the bourse's platform.
  • As per the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the Andhra Pradesh government would facilitate MSMEs to get listed on NSE Emerge, the platform for small and medium enterprises, by supporting such firms financially or otherwise, in bearing the expenses related to listing.
  • "A fund is also being created by the Andhra Pradesh government to encourage investors to invest in the fast-growing SMEs in the state, on the exchange platform," NSE said in a statement.
  • The MoU was signed between Andhra Pradesh government's industries, commerce & export promotion Commissioner Siddhartha Jain and NSE's Chief Business Development Officer Ravi Varanasi, at Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The pact was signed on the occasion of the International Day for MSMEs being celebrated on Tuesday.
  • The NSE will be hand-holding small and medium through the process of listing, thereby facilitating capacity building for the MSMEs, the exchange said.

Union Government constitutes K Kasturirangan Committee to prepare National Education Policy


  • The Union Government on 26 June 2017 constituted a committee for preparation of final draft of National Education Policy under the Chairmanship of eminent Scientist Padma Vibhushan K Kasturirangan.
  • The other members of the panel include chosen experts and educationists including former IAS officer KJ Alphonse Kanamthanam, who was instrumental in achieving 100 per cent literacy rate in Kottayam and Ernakulam districts of Kerala.
The other members of the committee are:

  • Vasudha Kamat: A prominent academician from the field of education technology who has contributed extensively towards school education. She was also Vice-Chancellor of SNDT University Mumbai.
  • Manjul Bhargava: A Professor of Mathematics in Princeton University USA. He was awarded field medal in mathematics at a quite young age for his contributions to Gauss number theory.
  • Ram Shankar Kureel: He is the Vice chancellor of Baba Saheb Ambedkar University of Social Sciences Mhau, Madhya Pradesh. He has published various national and international papers on inclusion of the marginalized in mainstream education and development.
  • TV Kattimani: He is Vice Chancellor of Tribal University, Amarkantak. He is from the field of language education and mass communication.

The United States and India released a joint statement: Prosperity through Partnership


  • India and the United States on 26 June 2017 released a Joint Statement (JS) titled - United States and India: Prosperity through Partnership. The JS was released after bilateral talks were held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald J. Trump.
  • Prime Minister was in the United States from 25 to 26 June 2017. During this visit, President Donald J. Trump hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on June 26 for an official visit to Washington, D.C.
  • This was Modi’s first US visit since Donald became the President of the nation.
  • Aim of the Visit: The visit that marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and the United States was planned to expand and deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations. It also aims to advance common objectives.
  • Common objectives include combatting terrorist threats, promoting stability across the Indo-Pacific region, increasing free and fair trade, and strengthening energy linkages.
  • The leaders announced an increased cooperation to prevent terrorist travel and to disrupt global recruitment efforts by expanding intelligence-sharing and operational-level counterterrorism cooperation.
  • They welcomed the commencement of the exchange of information on known and suspected terrorists for travel screening.
  • They further resolved to strengthen information exchange on plans, movements and linkages of terrorist groups and their leaders, as well as on raising and moving of funds by terrorist groups.
  • The leaders also affirmed their support for a U.N. Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism that will advance and strengthen the framework for global cooperation and reinforce the message that no cause or grievance justifies terrorism.
  • The United States has offered for India’s consideration the sale of Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial Systems, which would enhance India’s capabilities and promote shared security interests.
  • Resolving to expand their maritime security cooperation, the leaders announced their intention to build on the implementation of their "White Shipping” data sharing arrangement, which enhances collaboration on maritime domain awareness.
  • President Trump also welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s strong support for the United States to join as an Observer in the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium.
  • Noting the importance of the upcoming MALABAR naval exercise, the leaders determined to expand their engagements on shared maritime objectives and to explore new exercises.

India-Portugal signed 11 agreements during PM Modi’s visit


  • India-Portugal signed 11 agreements/MoUs ranging from science and technology, education, anti-terrorism, climate, among others. The signed MoUs will help in enhancing the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
  • In addition, the two nations also announced a four million euros joint fund to bolster research in science and technology. The fund was announced after in-depth talks between PM Modi and his Portuguese counterpart António Costa on cooperation in areas like counter-terrorism, space, climate studies and start-ups.
  • The MoUs were signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Portugal on 24 June 2017. Modi is the first Indian prime minister in Portugal on a bilateral visit. At the time of signing of these 11 MoUs, PM Modi was on a three-nation tour, namely Portugal, the US and the Netherlands.

China's fastest bullet train makes its debut run


  • China launched its first self-developed 'next-generation' bullet train 'Fuxing' with a maximum speed of 400kmh on 26 June 2017.
  • The train was launched on one of the country’s busiest lines -Beijing-Shanghai line. With the launch, Beijing aims to capture global high-speed rail market.
  • The first run happened simultaneously from two stations-Beijing and Shanghai.
  • While a CR400AF model train was flagged off from Beijing South Railway Station towards Shanghai, a CR400BF model left Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for Beijing.
  • The model train on the way to Shanghai took about five hours and 45 minutes to reach its destination.
  • On the way, the train stopped at 10 stations, including Jinan, Shandong province and Tianjin.
  • The Beijing-Shanghai line sees a footfall of around 50 5000 passengers daily.
  • Also, China has the world's longest railway network with 22,000 kilometres by the end of last year, about 60 percent of the world's total.

US declares Pakistan-based Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin as global terrorist


  • The United States (US) Department of State on 26 June 2017 declared Syed Salahuddin, Chief of the terrorist group Hizbul Mujahideen, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. The declaration came a few hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with President Donald Trump.
  • The outfits that Syed Salahuddin leads have perpetuated cross border terrorism against India including in Kashmir from the territory of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for a number of years. Salahuddin has been operating out of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
  • This declaration will prohibit US nationals from engaging in transactions with Salahuddin. Also, all of Salahuddin's property and interests in property subject to United States jurisdiction are blocked.

Romanian President appoints Mihai Tudose as Prime Minister


  • Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on 26 June 2017 appointed Social Democrat Mihai Tudose as the Prime Minister and mandated him to form a new government.
  • Tudose was officially validated as proposal for the Prime Minister office by the National Executive Committee convention of the main ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD).
  • Tudose now has 10 days to win over Romania's parliament with a vote of confidence in his proposed cabinet and policy programme.
  • Tudose was one of the potential candidates for Prime Minister brought forward by the majority coalition led by the Social Democratic Party to succeed Sorin Grindeanu after the latter was dismissed by a motion of no confidence adopted in Parliament by his own party.

Manushi Chhillar crowned Femina Miss India World 2017


  • Haryana’s Manushi Chhillar on 25 June 2017 was crowned the 54th Femina Miss India World 2017. The event was held at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The first runner-up of the contest is Sana Dua from Jammu and Kashmir and the second runner-up is Priyanka Kumari from Bihar.
  • Chhillar was crowned by the outgoing Miss India Priyadarshini Chatterjee.

Dhanraj Pillay to get East Bengal football club's highest honour


  • Former Indian hockey captain, Dhanraj Pillay would be conferred East Bengal football club's highest honour - Bharat Gaurav -at its foundation day ceremony on 1 August 2017.
  • Speaking on the occasion, club secretary Kalyan Majumdar stated that Pillay's contribution to Indian hockey is immense and that the club is honoured and humbled that he has accepted their request and will be present for the Foundation Day.

Srinivas Gokulnath becomes 1st Indian to finish Race Across America in solo category


  • Two Indians from Maharashtra, Srinivas Gokulnath and Amit Samarth created history on 25 June 2017 by becoming the first from the country to complete the 4900 km long Race Across America (RAAM) in the solo category.
  • RAAM is considered as one of the most esteemed ultra-endurance cycling events in the world. While 36-year-old Gokulnath finished the distance of 4941kms in 11 days and 18 hours, Samarth took 11 days and 21 hours to finish the race.
  • Featuring among the only nine men who finished the tough cycling race, Gokulnath stood 7th followed by Samarth in the 8th position.
  • The race had another Indian participant, Samim Rizvi, who withdrew from it after 500 miles.
  • The riders were expected to finish the distance in 288 hours. The winner of the race was Christoph Strasser.
  • Team Sahyadri Cyclists, from Gokulnath's hometown of Nashik, completed the race in the 4-men category in eight days and 10 hrs.               

Kidambi Srikanth beats Chen Long to win 2017 Australian Open


  • Kidambi Srikanth on 25 June 2017 won the 2017 Australian Open Men’s Singles title.
  • Srikanth defeated Olympic champion Chen Long 22-20, 21-16 to clinch the Sydney crown.
  • On the other hand, Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara won the Women’s Singles title.

Obituaries

Desh Bandhu Gupta, founder of pharma giant-Lupin passes away


  • Desh Bandhu Gupta, founder and Chairman of Lupin, India’s second-largest pharmaceutical company passed away on 26 June 2017 in Mumbai. He was 79.
  • Gupta had not been keeping well for some time and was not actively involved in the business for a few years. He is survived by his wife and five children.
  • Speaking on their father’s demise, Vinita Gupta and Nilesh Gupta, CEO and MD of Lupin said in a joint statement, “We are deeply saddened with the demise of our father. What DBG (Desh Bandhu Gupta) put in motion 50 years ago in helping to create, innovate and lead in the pharmaceutical space is an unparalleled legacy.”
  • The statement further added, “Those who knew and worked with DBG, remember him giving generously and fostering a dynamic environment where people could learn and grow. We will continue to build on his legacy and live by the values he instilled.”
