  1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has removed the restriction on foreign investment in IDFC Ltd after the shareholding of overseas investors fell below the prescribed level.
  2. India and Portugal on 17 May 2017 signed a Protocol of Cooperation agreement to promote cooperation in the field of archives. The information regarding this was published by Press Information Bureau on 20 June 2017.
  3. Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute of Pune was on 21 June 2017 selected as the first recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Promotion and Development of Yoga for 2017. The award was announced on the occasion of third edition of International Yoga Day.
  4. Qatar Airways on 20 June 2017 was announced the World’s Best Airline at the SKYTRAX 2017 World Airline Awards.
  5. International Yoga Day was celebrated world-wide on 21 June 2017. The day is being celebrated with the theme "Yoga for Health".
  6. Anil Kumble, the legendary cricketer and cricket thinker, resigned from the post of head Coach of the Indian Cricket team on 20 June 2017. His resignation came four days before the limited overs tour to the Caribbean (West Indies team) begins.

RBI lifts restriction on foreign investment in IDFC

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has removed the restriction on foreign investment in IDFC Ltd after the shareholding of overseas investors fell below the prescribed level.
  • "The foreign shareholding by foreign institutional investors/foreign portfolio investors in IDFC have gone below the prescribed FII/FPI investment limit. Hence, the restrictions placed on the purchase of shares by FII/FPI of the above company, are withdrawn with immediate effect," the RBI said in the notification.
  • Foreign portfolio investors held 32.18% stake in IDFC Ltd as on June 19, 2017.
  • FIIs, NRIs and PIOs (Persons of Indian Origins) can invest in primary and secondary capital markets in India through PIS.
  • The RBI monitors the ceilings on FII/NRI/PIO investments in Indian companies on a daily basis and has fixed the cut-off points two percentage points lower than the actual ceiling.

India and Portugal sign historical agreement to promote cooperation in field of archives

  • India and Portugal on 17 May 2017 signed a Protocol of Cooperation agreement to promote cooperation in the field of archives. The information regarding this was published by Press Information Bureau on 20 June 2017.
  • The agreement was signed between the National Archives of India and the Minister of Culture of the Portuguese Republic in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • The first set of documents were handed over to Raghvendra Singh, Secretary to the Union Government and Director General of National Archives of India.
  • As a first step under this agreement, the Torre do Tombo (National Archives of Portugal) handed over digital copies of 62 volumes of the collection known as ‘Moncoes do Reino’ (Monsoon correspondence) to the National Archives of India.
  • These volumes were originally part of over 456 volumes that cover the period from 1568 to 1914 and form the largest of all record collections in the Goa State Archives. 
  • The collection consists of direct correspondence from Lisbon to Goa and is important primary source for the study of the Portuguese expansion in Asia, their trade rivalries with the Arabs and European powers and their relations with neighbourings Kings in South Asia and East Asia. 
  • In 1777, these 62 volumes, consisting of over 12000 documents and pertaining to the period from 1605 to 1651, were shifted from Goa to Lisbon where these were printed under the title ‘Documentos Remetidos da India’(Documents sent from India) by the Academy of Science at Lisbon.

Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute selected for PM's Yoga Award 2017

  • Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute of Pune was on 21 June 2017 selected as the first recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Promotion and Development of Yoga for 2017. The award was announced on the occasion of third edition of International Yoga Day.
  • The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute has worked to spread Yoga internationally over a period of 4 decades. The Institute published books on Yoga which were also translated into multiple languages. There are thousands of Iyengar Yoga teachers popularising and propagating yoga across the world.
  • The Award was recommended by an Evaluation Committee (Jury) constituted under the Chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary. The Evaluation Committee also includes Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, Secretary (AYUSH) and Veerendra Heggade as its members.

Qatar Airways announced World's Best Airline at 2017 Skytrax World Airline Awards

  • Qatar Airways on 20 June 2017 was announced the World’s Best Airline at the SKYTRAX 2017 World Airline Awards.
  • Qatar Airways was voted Best Airline by travellers across the world in the annual passenger survey.
  • The Doha based carrier has now won the prestigious Airline of the Year title for a fourth time.
  • Qatar Airways also won the World’s Best Business Class, the World’s Best First Class Lounge and the Best Airline in the Middle East awards.
  • On the other hand, Air Asia won awards for being the Best Low-Cost Airline in Asia for a month year in the row, and also as World's Best Low-Cost Airline Premium Cabin 2017.

3rd edition of International Yoga Day celebrated worldwide on June 21

  • International Yoga Day was celebrated world-wide on 21 June 2017. The day is being celebrated with the theme "Yoga for Health".
  • The year’s theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieve an equilibrium between mind and body. The organizers believe that this approach to health and wellbeing can make a direct and useful contribution to humankind's quest to achieve sustainable development and move towards lifestyles that are in harmony with nature.
  • Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.
  • Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the
  • International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

Anil Kumble resigns as head coach of Indian Cricket team

  • Anil Kumble, the legendary cricketer and cricket thinker, resigned from the post of head Coach of the Indian Cricket team on 20 June 2017. His resignation came four days before the limited overs tour to the Caribbean (West Indies team) begins.
  • During this trip to the Caribbean, the team management will be supervised by MV Sridhar, the general manager of cricket operations. The batting coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar will continue in their roles.
  • At the time of his resignation, Kumble was present in London to attend the chief executives meeting of the ICC. He is the chairman of the ICC’s cricket committee.
