  1. India and Russia on 1 May 2017 signed five Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs)/agreements including a program of cultural exchanges and implementation of the high-speed service at the Nagpur-Secunderabad section among others.
  2. The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on 1 June 2017 launched INAM-Pro + web platform in New Delhi.  INAM-Pro+ is an upgraded version of INAM-Pro, the web portal launched by the Ministry in 2015 as a common platform to bring cement buyers and sellers together.
  3. The State Bank of India (SBI) today announced financing of rooftop solar projects worth Rs 400 crore, with private developers. This would add at least 100 Mw of rooftop solar capacity to the grid, and is a significant step towards meeting the Central government's target for 40 Gw of rooftop solar installations.
  4. Samsung India on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) for its Samsung Technical School initiative, renewing its partnership for 10 existing schools run across the country and adding two new MSME-Samsung Technical Schools at Bengaluru and Jamshedpur.
  5. The Odisha state government is all set to commission the ambitious Early Warning Dissemination System (EWDS) that would set off a warning in the event of the occurrence of natural disasters like a tsunami or cyclone by July 2017.
  6. India Army on 2 June 2017 successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a user trial.
  7. India and Russia on 1 June 2017 signed the St Petersburg Declaration to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
  8. Making of Developed India (MODI), the three-day festival, was launched in Andhra Pradesh on 2  June 2017 to celebrate the successful completion of the three-year rule by the NDA government.
  9. Amul Thapar, an Indian-American legal luminary, has been appointed a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by President Donald Trump, the White House has said.
  10. President Donald Trump announced on 1 June 2017 that he would withdraw the United States from the landmark 2015 Paris agreement to fight climate change.
  11. Manika Batra and Mouma Das on 1 June 2017 entered into the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships in Dusseldorf. With this, the duo also created a history by becoming the first Indian pair to reach the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships.

Five agreements signed between India and Russia during PM Modi’s visit to St Petersburg


  • India and Russia on 1 May 2017 signed five Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs)/agreements including a program of cultural exchanges and implementation of the high-speed service at the Nagpur-Secunderabad section among others.
  • The agreements were signed with an aim to boost the bilateral relations between the two nations. These agreements were inked during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia. Modi was in Russia between 1 May and 2 May 2017.
List of MoUs/Agreements exchanged during the visit of Prime Minister to Russia

  • The program of cultural exchanges for 2017-2019 was signed. The MoU was signed between the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of India.
  • The General Framework Agreement for the construction of the third stage of the Kudankulam NPP (KK5 & KK6) along with the Credit Protocol.
  • Agreement on granting access to Rospatent experts to the Indian Digital Library of Traditional Knowledge (TKDL) was signed. The agreement was signed between the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) and the Council of India for Scientific and Industrial Research.
  • The contract on the preparation of the justification for the implementation of the high-speed service at the Nagpur-Secunderabad section was inked. The contract was signed between JSC Russian Railways and the Ministry of Railways of India.
  • Memorandum of cooperation between ALROSA Joint Stock Company (Public Joint Stock Company) and the Council for the Promotion of the Export of Precious Stones and Jewellery of India.

Union Government launches web platform INAM-Pro +


  • The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on 1 June 2017 launched INAM-Pro + web platform in New Delhi.
  • INAM-Pro+ is an upgraded version of INAM-Pro, the web portal launched by the Ministry in 2015 as a common platform to bring cement buyers and sellers together.
  • The web portal was designed by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL).
  • More than 700 construction companies have used INAM-Pro during the last two years. With 37 Cement companies registered on it, the portal facilitated comparison of price, availability of materials etc. and made it very convenient for the prospective buyers to procure cement at reasonable rates.
  • The publicly visible prices promoted transparency and enhanced ease of doing business. The companies registered on INAM-Pro have a committed supply of 27 million metric tons of cement.

SBI clears 100 Mw solar projects worth Rs 400 cr under World Bank programme


  • The State Bank of India (SBI) today announced financing of rooftop solar projects worth Rs 400 crore, with private developers. This would add at least 100 Mw of rooftop solar capacity to the grid, and is a significant step towards meeting the Central government's target for 40 Gw of rooftop solar installations.
  • SBI has availed the loan of $625 million from the World Bank for on-lending to viable Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar PV (GRPV) projects undertaken by PV developers/aggregators and end-users, for installation of rooftop solar systems on the rooftops of commercial, institutional and industrial buildings. Implementation of the program by SBI will support the installation of more than 600 Mw of rooftop solar capacity.
  • With the World Bank funded capacity development program, SBI is making efforts to expand and incentivize the market for rooftop solar power by way of low-cost financing.  Financing is being provided to those with sound technical capacity, relevant experience, and creditworthiness, meeting SBI standards.
  • Developers that the SBI will be financing under this programme include Azure Power, Amplus, and Cleanmax amongst others. The capacity of the projects and programme financed range from 25kWp to 16Mw.

Samsung, MSME sign MoU for Samsung Technical School initiative


  • Samsung India on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) for its Samsung Technical School initiative, renewing its partnership for 10 existing schools run across the country and adding two new MSME-Samsung Technical Schools at Bengaluru and Jamshedpur.
  • Samsung runs another 10 such schools in collaboration with departments of technical education in different states such as Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar, Delhi and West Bengal, taking the total to 22.
  • Reinforcing its commitment to the government’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, Samsung also announced the MSME-Samsung Technical School Scholarship program for girls and differently-abled trainees. A Meritorious Reward Program for toppers at these institutes has also been launched.
  • Under the MSME-Samsung Technical School Scholarship program, 1,000 girls and differently-abled trainees, who have successfully completed the basic course, will be given a scholarship of up to Rs. 20,000. This will cover the entire fee for the Samsung Advanced Repair and Industrial Skills Enhancement 2 (A.R.I.S.E.2) program and will help augment the number of girls and differently-abled trainees at the schools.

Country’s First Automatic Coastal Warning for Disasters to come up in Odisha


  • The Odisha state government is all set to commission the ambitious Early Warning Dissemination System (EWDS) that would set off a warning in the event of the occurrence of natural disasters like a tsunami or cyclone by July 2017.
  • Just a single button press from the control room in the state’s capital would trigger loud sirens to go off simultaneously from towers at 122 locations, warning the vast population residing along the state’s 480 km-long coast of the impending disaster.
  • Speaking on the development, Pradipta Mohapatra, Managing Director of the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), stated that the sound emanating from the towers would be heard in localities up to a radius of 1.5 km and as many as 122 alert towers have already been constructed.
  • The project is being implemented with assistance from the World Bank, at an estimated cost of ₹ 82 crore.
  • Odisha is the first State in India to have developed an automatic public address system that can be activated along its entire coast.Neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh is also reportedly developing such system to alert the people in case of natural calamities.

Prithvi-II missile successfully test-fired


  • India Army on 2 June 2017 successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a user trial.
  • The trial of this surface-to-surface missile was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.
  • Prithvi-II Missile is the first missile to be developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP).

India-Russia mark 70 years of diplomatic ties with St Petersburg Declaration


  • India and Russia on 1 June 2017 signed the St Petersburg Declaration to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
  • The declaration is an action plan for deepening not only political and economic development of the two countries but also to ensure a benchmark of stability in times of global instability.  It was signed following the annual bilateral summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • Stating that the economies of India and Russia complement each other in the energy sector, the declaration said that both the countries would "strive to build an 'Energy Bridge' between their states and expand bilateral relations in all areas of energy cooperation, including nuclear, hydrocarbon, hydel and renewable energy sources and in improving energy efficiency".

Andhra Pradesh hosts 3-day MODI fest


  • Making of Developed India (MODI), the three-day festival, was launched in Andhra Pradesh on 2  June 2017 to celebrate the successful completion of the three-year rule by the NDA government.
  • The festival was inaugurated by former minister K. Lakshminarayana. He said the purpose of the festival is to drive home various welfare schemes launched by the NDA government during the past 3 years for the benefit of the common man, the farming community, the youth and especially the women for their empowerment in the society with the theme 'sabka saath sabka vikas'.
  • The festival would be held in three phases in three districts of Andhra Pradesh, at Government Ghantasala Music College in Vijayawada, Ambedkar Bhawan, Rajvihar Circle in Kurnool and at Gokul Park, Ramakrishna Beach in Visakhapatnam.

Trump appoints Indian-American Amul Thapar as Judge on US Court of Appeal


  • Amul Thapar, an Indian-American legal luminary, has been appointed a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by President Donald Trump, the White House has said.
  • Before his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Judge Thapar served on the District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
  • Thapar, 48, was confirmed last week by the Senate 52-44 in a vote on party lines.
  • The son of Indian-American immigrants, Thapar was the Nation's first Article III judge of South Asian descent.
  • In addition to his career on Federal bench, Thapar has served as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky and as an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio and the District of Columbia.

Trump announces US withdrawal from Paris Agreement on Climate Change


  • President Donald Trump announced on 1 June 2017 that he would withdraw the United States from the landmark 2015 Paris agreement to fight climate change.
  • The move, perfectly in line with Trump’s "America First" message that he used during his Presidential campaign, has drawn flak from US allies and business leaders across the world.
  • Trump stated that the Paris accord would undermine the U.S. economy, cost U.S. jobs, weaken American national sovereignty and put the country at a permanent disadvantage to the other countries of the world.
  • "The nations asking us to stay in the agreement are the same countries that have collectively cost America trillions of dollars through tough trade practices and in many cases lax contributions to our critical military alliance," Trump said.

Mouma-Manika makes history by becoming first Indian pair to reach quarters of World TT Championships


  • Manika Batra and Mouma Das on 1 June 2017 entered into the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships in Dusseldorf. With this, the duo also created a history by becoming the first Indian pair to reach the quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis Championships.
  • Mouma and Manika created history with luck on their side as they got a walkover from the Netherlands and Polish combination of Li Jie and Li Quian, the latter reportedly was hospitalised last night after falling sick.
  • After qualifying for the quarterfinals, Mouma said, "I don't know what to even feel. It's just sad that our opponents could not play the match. But at the same time, I am so elated that we have created history for our country".
  • Now in quarterfinals, the Indian duo will take Chinese pair of Ding Ning (ranked no. 1) and Liu Shiwe (ranked no. 2) on 2 June 2017. The Chinese pair is considered as a lethal left and right combination in the world of Table Tennis.

Indian-American girl Ananya Vinay wins 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee competition of US

  • Ananya Vinay, a 12-year-old Indian-American girl from California, on 1 June 2017 won the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee competition of the United States (US). With this, Ananya became the thirteenth Indian-American in a row to win this spelling bee competition.
  • Ananya Vinay and another Indian-American Rohan Rajeev faced each other in the final round. Ananya won on the word 'marocain', which means fabric.
  • Among the other words which young participants were asked to spell were: pterygoideus, mollienisia, cinerarium and hesychast.
  • As a winner, Ananya will be awarded with a USD 40000 cash prize, a trophy and other awards, including a USD 2500 US savings bond from Merriam-Webster as well as trips to New York and California for televised appearances.
