  1. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry on 12 May 2017 revised the base year of All-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from  2004-05 to  2011-12.
  2. The Indian Coir sector’s revenue from exports touched an all time high of Rs 2282 Cr by value and 9.57 Metric Tonnes in quantity in the 2016-17 financial year.
  3. The Mumbai airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International, has become the world’s busiest single-runway airport with 837 flights a day or one flight in 65 seconds on an average in the 2016-17 fiscal year. The airport has even overtaken London's Gatwick airport that had 757 flights a day.
  4. India & UK have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on bilateral cooperation between the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Britain’s Transport For London (TFL) in  urban transport policy planning, technology transfer and institutional organization of transport on 12 May 2017.
  5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the river conservation project ‘Narmada Seva Mission’ on 15 May 2017 in Madhya Pradesh.
  6. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda on 13 May 2017 launched Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) against Pneumonia under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
  7. Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the second meeting of National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) on 15 May 2017 in New Delhi.
  8. Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft on 12 May 2017 successfully fired Derby Air-to-Air BVR missile in RADAR guided mode, demonstrating an Air-to-Air Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile firing capability.
  9. The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to declare "no school bag day" on Saturdays in all the state-run schools.

Union Government revises Base Year of WPI to 2011-2012 from 2004-05


  • The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry on 12 May 2017 revised the base year of All-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from  2004-05 to  2011-12.
  • The base year of WPI was revised in order to align it with the base year of other macroeconomic indicators like the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
Highlights of the new series of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with base year 2011-12

  • In the revised series, WPI will continue to constitute three Major Groups namely  Primary  Articles, Fuel  &  Power  and  Manufactured Products.
  • Increase in number of items from 676 to 697.  In all, 199 new items have been added and 146 old items have been dropped.
  • The new series is  more representative with increase in number of quotations from 5482 to 8331, an increase by 2849 quotations (52 per cent).
  • Prices used for compilation do not include indirect taxes in  order  to  remove  impact  of  fiscal policy.  This will make  the  new  WPI conceptually closer to ‘Producer Price Index’.
  • A new “WPI Food Index” will be compiled to capture the rate of inflation in food items.
  • Seasonality of fruits and vegetables has been updated to account for more months as these are now available for longer duration.

Indian Coir Sector’s export revenue touched all time high in fiscal 16-17


  • The Indian Coir sector’s revenue from exports touched an all time high of Rs 2282 Cr by value and 9.57 Metric Tonnes in quantity in the 2016-17 financial year.
  • These figures were revealed by Union Minister for Micro Small and Micro Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh on 13 May 2017 during a press conference in Kochi.
  • The minister stated in his speech that these figures represent a 27 per cent increase in value and 20 per cent increase in quantity during the 16-17 fiscal year.
  • The Minister was joined by the Coir Board Chairman C P Radhakrishnan.
  • The coir sector had fetched export revenue of Rs 1630 Cr in the financial year 2015-16 against Rs 1,476 Cr achieved in fiscal year 2014-15.

Mumbai airport busiest with 1 flight every 65 seconds


  • The Mumbai airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International, has become the world’s busiest single-runway airport with 837 flights a day or one flight in 65 seconds on an average in the 2016-17 fiscal year.
  • The airport has even overtaken London's Gatwick airport that had 757 flights a day. The city also tops in terms of the number of passengers with almost 45.2 million people flying in and out in fiscal 2017 as against 44 million at Gatwick airport.
  • No other large city in the world is served by one airport that too with a single-runway.
  • All the leading cities in the world including New York, London, Dubai, and Singapore have more than one airport with multiple runways.
  • The New Delhi airport also has in use three parallel runways at any given time.
  • In comparison, Mumbai works with just a single runway for both passenger and cargo aircraft and when it is shut for repairs, it uses the secondary runway.
  • The scarcity of land doesn’t restrict the flight network of the city, as it operates to about 95 domestic and international destinations.

India and UK to sign MoU to increase efficiency of urban transport system


  • India & UK have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on bilateral cooperation between the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Britain’s Transport For London (TFL) in  urban transport policy planning, technology transfer and institutional organization of transport on 12 May 2017.
  • The decision was taken during the three-day official visit of Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, to Britain.
  • The proposal includes exchange of information and expertise between the TFL the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on the mobility and efficiency of the transport system and the methodologies to facilitate the planning and delivery of mobility solutions.
  • The mobility solutions include passenger information, ticketing, major project financing, infrastructure maintenance strategies and behavioral change and public transport promotion.
  • The MoU’s would be signed through diplomatic channels within the coming days.

PM Modi launches Narmada river conservation project in MP


  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the river conservation project ‘Narmada Seva Mission’ on 15 May 2017 in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The project is a road-map for steps to be taken for the conservation of the Narmada River in the state. Speaking on the same before the launch, Modi said that the mission will surely have a major impact on the state’s ecology.
  • The event was organised at Amarkantak, in Anooppur district, the place from where the river originates.
  • The Prime Minister released a road map for the conservation of Narmada, to ensure it is pollution free.
  • The roadmap is a result of wide range of consultations with various stakeholders including river conservation experts, environmentalists and others directly associated with the river.
  • The programme marks the conclusion of ‘Namami Devi Narmade Sewa Yatra’, which was launched on 11 December 2016 by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Amarkantak.
  • The five-month Narmada river conservation awareness campaign was concluded after covering a distance of 3,344 km and passing through over 1,100 villages and towns.

Union Government launches Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine against Pneumonia


  • Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda on 13 May 2017 launched Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) against Pneumonia under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
  • PCV will protect children against severe forms of pneumococcal disease, such as pneumonia and meningitis. Currently, the vaccine is being rolled out to approximately 21 lakh children in Himachal Pradesh and in some parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the first phase.
  • These vaccines will later be introduced in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in 2018 and will be eventually expanded across the country in a phased manner.
  • The vaccine will also support efforts of the state government in further bringing down the child mortality. To raise awareness about PCV, the ministry also unveiled the communication material comprising TV and radio spots, posters, banners, etc. at the event.
  • The Ministry also announced an extensive awareness campaign so that maximum number of people can avail these services.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates 2nd NPDRR meeting in Delhi


  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the second meeting of National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) on 15 May 2017 in New Delhi.
  • The meeting saw in attendance over 1000 eminent guests including Union Ministers, State Ministers, Heads of specialized disaster management agencies and representatives from private sector organizations.
  • The second meeting of NPDRR will be held from 15 to 16 May 2017 with the theme “Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development: Making India resilient by 2030”.
  • The event would include a Plenary Session, one session on outcomes of pre-events, four technical sessions on four priority areas of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, one technical session on monitoring of Sendai Framework and a closing cum valedictory session.

Light Combat aircraft Tejas successfully test-fires air-to-air missile


  • Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft on 12 May 2017 successfully fired Derby Air-to-Air BVR missile in RADAR guided mode, demonstrating an Air-to-Air Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile firing capability.
  • The flawless launch was demonstrated with all onboard systems performing up to the mark and the missile scored a direct hit on the target, completely destroying it.
  • The launch was performed in Lock ON after Launch mode for a BVR target in the look down mode and the target was destroyed.

Yogi Adityanath to declare no school bag day in UP government schools


  • The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to declare "no school bag day" on Saturdays in all the state-run schools.
  • The proposal for the same was submitted at a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma on 12 May 2017 in Lucknow.
  • The move aims to encourage more involvement of children in creative activities on those days.
  • It will also help establish a good rapport between students and teachers and help in their personality development.
  • Previously, the UP government led by Yogi Adityanath decided to do away with the khaki uniform worn by students of government schools.

V K Saraswat appointed as Chancellor of JNU


  • Eminent scientist V K Saraswat was on 12 May 2017 appointed as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).  He succeeds former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan, who completed his term on 30 March 2017.
  • Saraswat will serve five years term at JNU. He is currently serving as the Member of NITI Aayog.
  • As the Chancellor of JNU, Saraswat will discharge functions such as presiding over the convocation ceremony for awarding degrees. Apart from being a member of the JNU court, he will be the competent authority to sanction leave to the vice-chancellor.

Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win 5th Madrid Open title


  • Spain’s Rafael Nadal on 14 May 2017 won Madrid Open title of Tennis. In the final match at Madrid, the Spaniard defeated a determined Dominic Thiem of Austria in straight sets 7-6(8), 6-4.
  • Thiem resisted three championship points but Nadal seized the fourth with a drop shot to the back of the court to clinch his third consecutive clay-court crown, after winning in Monte Carlo and Barcelona in April 2017. For the 14-times Grand Slam Winner, it was also the 72nd tournament win of his career.
  • With this, Nadal, who defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, also won his 30th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. His 30 World Tour Masters 1000 titles is a tie with Serbia’s Djokovic.

  • The International Day of Families was observed on 15 May 2017 with the theme “Families, education and well-being”. The day is observed annually on 15 May to provide an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
  • The year’s observance focuses on the role of families and family oriented policies in promoting the educational and overall well-being of their members. In particular, the Day is to raise awareness of the role of families in promoting early childhood education and lifelong learning opportunities for children and youth.
