  1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday imposed a monetary penalty on Kotak Mahindra Bank and Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd for violation of instructions on reporting requirements of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.
  2. The Centre has sanctioned construction of over one lakh more houses for the urban poor with an investment of Rs 4,200 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
  3. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), Tuesday announced a tie-up with CMA Terminals (CMAT) - part of the France based CMA CGM group, commissioning a new container terminal at the Mundra port.
  4. India and Sri Lanka on 26 April 2017 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on economic co-operation. The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi.
  5. India signed three agreements with Armenia on 25 April 2017 in Yerevan to boost bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The agreements were signed following Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari’s talks with Armenia’s top leadership including President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian.
  6. The Union Government on 25 April 2017 announced 10 Swachh Iconic Places to be taken under the Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative.
  7. Senior IPS officer Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar was on Wednesday appointed as the Director General of the CRPF.
  8. The White House on 25 April 2017 appointed Iraq War veteran, Major General Randolph Alles as the new Director of the Secret Service.
  9. The World Intellectual Property Day 2016 was on 26 April 2017 observed across the world with the theme Innovation – Improving Lives.
  10. The International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day 2017 was observed across the world on 26 April 2017.
  11. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Peggy Whitson on 24 April 2017 set a new US record for most cumulative days spent in space.
  12. Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur on 24 April 2017 clinched a gold medal in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet in Jinhua, China.

RBI fines Kotak Mahindra, HSBC for violating FEMA


  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday imposed a monetary penalty on Kotak Mahindra Bank and Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd for violation of instructions on reporting requirements of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.
  • The central bank slapped a fine of Rs70,000 on HSBC and Rs10,000 on Kotak Mahindra Bank in exercise of the powers in RBI under the provisions of section 11(3) of the FEMA Act.
  • “The Reserve Bank of India had issued a show cause notice to the bank, in response to which the bank submitted a written reply and also made oral submissions thereon. After considering the facts of the case and the bank’s reply in the matter, the Reserve Bank of India came to the conclusion that the violations were substantiated and warranted imposition of penalty,” said the regulator.

Govt sanctions 1 lakh houses worth Rs 4,200 crore for urban poor


  • The Centre has sanctioned construction of over one lakh more houses for the urban poor with an investment of Rs 4,200 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
  • With the latest sanctions, the Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) Ministry has approved construction of over 18.75 lakh houses for Economically Weaker Sections in 2,151 cities and towns across the country since the launch of the scheme in June 2015, an official release said.
  • In the latest round of sanctions, BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh got the highest number of 57,131 houses followed by Tamil Nadu, where 24,576 affordable houses got the Centre's nod.
  • Madhya Pradesh tops the overall list of states in getting approvals with over 2.66 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY (Urban) with a total investment of Rs 18,283 crore. Tamil Nadu is second with over 2.52 lakh houses with a total project cost of Rs 9,112 crore.
  • Under the scheme, the Central assistance is provided to each beneficiary in the range of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.35 lakh.

APSEZ inks pact with France's CMA CGM to operate Mundra Port


  • Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), Tuesday announced a tie-up with CMA Terminals (CMAT) - part of the France based CMA CGM group, commissioning a new container terminal at the Mundra port.
  • The new terminal will have an annual capacity of 1.3 million TEUs. With this, Mundra Port's container handling capacity increases to 5.5 million TEUs, making it India's largest container port.
  • The new terminal has four units of 65 tonnes capacity of rail mounted quay cranes capable of handling 18,000 TEU vessels and super post and ultra large container vessels and an annual capacity of 1.3 million TEUs.

India and Sri Lanka sign MoU on Economic Cooperation


  • India and Sri Lanka on 26 April 2017 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on economic co-operation. The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi.
  • Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived in Delhi on 25 April 2017 with an aim to finalise an MoU on developing energy and infrastructure projects in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka and will discuss the issue of fishermen between the two countries.
  • Moreover, he will also stress for speeding up negotiations for the upgraded Free Trade Agreement ETCA (Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement) between the two countries.
  • The MoU proposes Indian investment in development of port and oil tank farms in Trincomalee.
  • It also calls for setting up of a LNG power plant and terminal, piped gas supply in Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
  • It also aims to undertake highway and railway projects in north and east of Sri Lanka.

India, Armenia sign three agreements


  • India signed three agreements with Armenia on 25 April 2017 in Yerevan to boost bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The agreements were signed following Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari’s talks with Armenia’s top leadership including President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian.
  • The meeting saw both sides agree on the fact that the international community must unite and speak with one voice against terrorism and not have double standards on the issue. Indian Vice President also stressed on the fact that there is nothing such as good or bad terrorism.
  • During the talks, India and Armenia agreed that connectivity is an important factor in their relationship and that there is need to enhance cooperation in the number of direct flights plying between the two nations.
  • They also agreed to liberalise visa procedures to augment people to people contact among their citizens.
  • They also agreed to increase cooperation in the agricultural sector. A joint working group is expected to meet soon to finalise the broader outline for the same.
  • Besides this, India agreed to help Armenia build satellite and remote sensing data matters and also train Armenian scientists.
  • In the cultural aspect, the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation in the broadcasting and film sector especially Bollywood.
  • Armenia has, in fact, extended an invitation to the Indian film industry to shoot in their country. A team from Bollywood is expected to visit Armenia to explore the possibility.

India to host 18th World Road Meeting


  • The International Road federation (IRF) on 26 April 2017 announced that India will host the 18th World Road Meeting (WRM 2017) which will be held on 13 November 2017.
  • The theme of World Road Meeting 2017 is ‘Safe Roads and Smart Mobility: The Engines of Economic Growth’.
  • The conference is expected to be attended by over 4000 delegates across the world and will include plenary sessions with eminent and well-known speakers discussing important issues facing mobility sector.

Union Government takes 10 new Swachh Iconic Places under Swachh Bharat Mission


  • The Union Government on 25 April 2017 announced 10 Swachh Iconic Places to be taken under the Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative.
  • The announcement was made during second quarterly review meeting on the Swachh Iconic Places that was held at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The aim of the Swachh Iconic Places is to make 100 places model Swachh Tourist Destinations that will enhance the experience for visitors from India and abroad.
The ten new iconic places are:
1. Gangotri
2. Yamunotri
3. Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain
4. Char Minar, Hyderabad
5. Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assissi, Goa
6. Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam
7. Gomateshwar in Shravanbelgola
8. Baijnath Dham, Devghar
9. Gaya Tirth in Bihar
10. Somnath temple in Gujarat

Conference on Dara Shikoh to be held in New Delhi


  • The international conference on Dara Shikoh: Reclaiming Spiritual Legacy of India will be held on 27 April and 28 April 2017 in New Delhi.
  • The conference will be organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
  • The international conference aims at presenting Dara Shikoh's contribution and initiatives in bringing about spiritual homogenisation of Hinduism and Islam and thereby building a cohesive social and cultural edifice of India.
  • The conference will also see the participation of eminent scholars, academics and historians from the US, Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and India.

Haryana’s Ballabgarh renamed as Balramgarh


  • Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister of Haryana, on 24 April 2017 announced the renaming of Ballabgarh town in Faridabad as Balramgarh.
  • However, the process to change the name of the town in official records may take a few months.
  • State’s MLA Moolchand Sharma and the Raja Nahar Singh Society had been demanding name change of the town from a long time. They wanted it to be renamed after its founder King Balram Singh.
  • It is not the first time that the Haryana Government has renamed a city, town or a village. In 2016, the Manohar Lal Khattar Government had renamed Gurgaon as Gurugram based on the historic connection of the city with Guru Dronacharya.

Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar appointed DG of CRPF


  • Senior IPS officer Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar was on Wednesday appointed as the Director General of the CRPF, two days after 25 personnel of the force were massacred by Naxals in Chhattisgarh.
  • The paramilitary force was headless for nearly two months after the retirement of K Durga Prasad on February 28.
  • Bhatnagar, a 1983 batch IPS officer, will be the new DG of the CRPF, official sources said.
  • Senior IPS officer R K Pachnanda was also appointed as the DG of Indo Tiben Border Police force.
  • Pachnanda is a 1983 batch IPS officer of West Bengal cadre.

White House names Randolph Alles as new Director of Secret Service


  • The White House on 25 April 2017 appointed Iraq War veteran, Major General Randolph Alles as the new Director of the Secret Service.
  • Alles has been made to lead the agency at a time when it is almost on the verge of collapse following a series of high-profile embarrassments over the years.
  • In his new position, Alles would be in charge of more than 1,200 federal agents and over 550 aircraft and maritime vessels.

World Intellectual Property Day 2017 observed globally


  • The World Intellectual Property Day 2016 was on 26 April 2017 observed across the world with the theme Innovation – Improving Lives.
  • The theme of the year explores how innovation makes lives healthier, safer and more comfortable.
  • The World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated to spread awareness about the role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
  • On this day, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) works together with various government agencies, non-government organizations, community groups and individuals to hold different events and activities to promote the day.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day 2017 observed


  • The International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day 2017 was observed across the world on 26 April 2017.
  • The Day commemorates the explosion at the Ukraine's Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 which spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
  • Due to the explosion, nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation.

World –

NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson sets new record for time in space


  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Peggy Whitson on 24 April 2017 set a new US record for most cumulative days spent in space.
  • With this, Whitson surpassed cosmonaut Jeff Williams’ record of 534 days, 2 hours and 48 minutes aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
  • With the recent extension of her stay at the ISS, the Expedition 51 commander has five months to rack up another record.

Manpreet Kaur wins shot put gold at Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet


  • Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur on 24 April 2017 clinched a gold medal in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet in Jinhua, China.
  • Manpreet came up with a best throw of 18.86 metre, a national record. In 2015, she made a national record after throwing a shot put at the distance of 17.96 metre.
  • With the win, the shot putter also acquired the No 1 spot in the world rankings.
  • With the performance, Manpreet also qualified for the IAAF World Championships to be held in August 2017 in London, UK.
  • Bian Song of China finished a distant second with 17.96 metres.
