  1. Private sector lender Yes Bank today announced alliance with Paisabazaar.com under which the bank will offer conditionally approved loans to the latter’s existing customers.
  2. India on 24 April 2017 became the world’s fifth-largest military spender, as per the figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). India spent around USD 55.9 billion for its military in the year 2016. As per the data of SIPRI, the United States remains the world’s largest military spender followed by China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia at 2nd, 3rd and 4th position respectively. The other prominent military spenders are Japan, South Korea, and Australia.
  3. The Indian Navy on 24 April 2017 began a joint maritime exercise Varuna with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea. The exercise will conclude on 30 April 2017.
  4. Renowned filmmaker and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath on 24 April 2017 won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2016. The award will be presented to him by President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May 2017 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  5. Vani Jairam, the versatile playback singer in the South Indian film industry, was presented with the Ghantasala national award on 23 April 2017 at a function held in Andhra Pradesh.
  6. Superstar Aamir Khan was on 25 April 2017 honoured with the 75th Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award for his film Dangal, which was one of the biggest hits of 2016. The award was bestowed upon him by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
  7. Social activist Prafulla Samantra was on 24 April 2017 selected for the Goldman Environmental Prize 2017 from Asia Region for his historic twelve year long legal battle that affirmed the land rights of indigenous Dongria Kondh and protected the Niyamgiri Hills from a massive aluminum ore mine.
  8. The Supreme Court (SC) on 24 April 2017 directed the Kerala government to reinstate T.P. Senkumar as Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. The ruling was made by a bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta. The bench ruled that Senkumar was dealt unfairly and arbitrarily .
  9. Etihad Aviation Group on 24 April 2017 appointed Robin Kamark as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airline Equity Partners.
  10. Indian sprinter Man Kaur on 24 April 2017 clinched the 100 metres sprint at the World Masters Games held in Auckland, New Zealand.
  11. Cuba and Morocco in the third week of April 2017 signed an agreement to re-establish diplomatic ties after a gap of 37 years.
  12. World Malaria Day (WMD) 2017 was observed globally on 25 April 2017 with the theme Malaria prevention: let’s close the gap.

Yes Bank ties up with Paisabazaar.com


  • Private sector lender Yes Bank today announced alliance with Paisabazaar.com under which the bank will offer conditionally approved loans to the latter’s existing customers.
  • As part of the partnership, the bank will help Paisabazaar.com through its advanced analytics and data mining capabilities to offer customers of the financial marketplace with customised and conditionally approved offers across retail lending products, Yes Bank said in a statement.
  • The aim is to make the process of availing a loan easy and seamless and act as a one stop financial solution provider for all retail lending needs of the customer, it said.
  • Speaking about the partnership, Pralay Mondal, Senior Group President of the Yes Bank said since inception, the bank has been a pioneer in using technology and innovation to revolutionise the banking experience in India.

India becomes world’s fifth largest military spender


  • India on 24 April 2017 became the world’s fifth-largest military spender, as per the figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). India spent around USD 55.9 billion for its military in the year 2016.

  • Global military spending amounted to 2.2 per cent of the worldwide GDP.
  • Military spending as a share of GDP was highest in the Middle East and was the lowest in the Americas.
  • In Asia and Oceania, military expenditure increased by 4.6 per cent in 2016, which was the result of tensions in the region such claims of territorial rights made by various countries in the South China Sea.
  • The US is the top spender whose military expenditure grew 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 to USD 611 billion.
  • China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia stood at 2nd, 3rd and 4th position respectively in the top 5 list of military spenders.


Indo-French naval exercise Varuna commences


  • The Indian Navy on 24 April 2017 began a joint maritime exercise Varuna with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea. The exercise will conclude on 30 April 2017.
  • The joint maritime exercise aims at deepening combat coordination between the two navies.
  • Guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai, stealth frigate INS Trishul and fleet tanker INS Aditya are taking part in the Varuna exercise.
  • The ships are part of the Indian Navy's overseas deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and West Coast of Africa and they arrived at Toulon port on southern France's Mediterranean coast.
  • The Varuna series of exercises began in 2000 and have evolved into an institutionalised form of interaction between the two navies.

India teams up with other nations to protect ancient heritage from terrorism

  • Ten nations from across the world came together on 24 April 2017 to form a group with the aim of protecting ancient heritage from extremism like that of the Islamic State, which led to the destruction of Syria’s ancient city, Palmyra.
  • The forum was launched in Athens, the capital city of Greece, by ministers and ambassadors from all the ten nations. The list includes India, Greece, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Bolivia, Peru, Italy, China and Mexico, all of which are home to some of the world’s greatest archaeological sites.
  • The group would mainly run joint projects to promote dialogue and culture in the face of fanaticism and terrorism. The project will be spearheaded by the Greek government along with China.

Legendary filmmaker Kasinathuni Viswanath wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2016


  • Renowned filmmaker and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath on 24 April 2017 won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2016. The award will be presented to him by President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May 2017 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • With this, Viswanath became the 48th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest recognition in Indian cinema. As a presenter of classical and traditional art, music and dance, K Viswanath has been a guiding force in the Indian film industry.
  • He also received recognition for his contributions to filmmaking in the form of the Padma Shri Award in 1992 by the Union Government.
  • He has also been awarded with 5 National Awards, 20 Nandi Awards (awarded by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh), 10 Filmfare Awards including Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • His National Award-winning film Swati Mutyam was India's official entry to the 59th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category.


Vani Jairam gets Ghantasala national award


  • Vani Jairam, the versatile playback singer in the South Indian film industry, was presented with the Ghantasala national award on 23 April 2017 at a function held in Andhra Pradesh. The award is instituted by the Ghantasala National Art Academy in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The 71-year-old singer received the award from A. Ramalingeswara Rao, a High court judge in Andhra Pradesh and R Ananda Bhaskar, Rajya Sabha member from the congress party.
  • Speaking on the honour, the singer stated that she valued the award the most, as it was instituted in the memory of the legendary singer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao who ruled the Telugu film music industry for over three decades.
  • The singer also fondly recalled her memory of Ghatasalagaru when he had readily obliged to sing on her request during their first meeting at the All India Radio station.


Aamir Khan receives Dinanath Mangeshkar Award 2017


  • Superstar Aamir Khan was on 25 April 2017 honoured with the 75th Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award for his film Dangal, which was one of the biggest hits of 2016. The award was bestowed upon him by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
  • By receiving the award, Aamir Khan broke his own record of not being part of any awards functions. He last attended an award show 16 years ago when Lagaan film was nominated in the Best Film category at the Academy Awards.
  • Legendary actress Vyjayanthimala Bali was also honoured with Master Dinanath Vishesh Puraskar for her achievements in Hindi cinema.
  • Mohan Wagh Award for best drama was presented to Sunil Barve for Amar Photo Studio Subak Sanstha.


Social activist Prafulla Samantra selected for Goldman Environmental Prize 2017

  • Social activist Prafulla Samantra was on 24 April 2017 selected for the Goldman Environmental Prize 2017 from Asia Region for his historic twelve year long legal battle that affirmed the land rights of indigenous Dongria Kondh and protected the Niyamgiri Hills from a massive aluminum ore mine.
  • He was among the six winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize or Green Nobel Prize. The other five winners for this year are: Mark Lopez (United States); Uroš Macerl (Slovenia); Rodrigo Tot (Guatemala); Rodrigue Katembo (Democratic Republic of Congo); and Wendy Bowman (Australia).
  • Samantara is only the sixth Indian to win the prize after Medha Patkar, M.C. Mehta, Rasheeda Bi, Champaran Shukla and Ramesh Agrawal since 1990 when the award was first instituted.


GNFC wins Golden Globe Tigers award

  • State-owned Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC) has won the prestigious Golden Globe Tigers Award for Excellence and Leadership in CSR in the category of ‘E-Payment Leadership’ for the implementation of digital transactions in its township at Bharuch, Gujarat.
  • The award recognises “Tigers” in marketing, branding CSR and social innovation, education and academic across leadership levels in an individual and organisation, the company said in a statement here.
  • This is the second award for GNFC in this category. A week ago, it had won the Golden Peacock Award in the category of Innovative Product/Service for its cashless innovation.
  • The Golden Globe Tigers Award was established by World CSR Institute. About 30 applications were shortlisted from which GNFC was selected as the winner.
  • GNFC emerged as the first fertiliser company in India to transition to a cashless economy successfully. Its township in Bharuch, Gujarat, became the first 100 per cent cashless township of India after demonetisation in November 2016.


Appointments –

SC directs Kerala government to reinstate TP Senkumar as DGP of Kerala


  • The Supreme Court (SC) on 24 April 2017 directed the Kerala government to reinstate T.P. Senkumar as Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. The ruling was made by a bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta. The bench ruled that Senkumar was dealt unfairly and arbitrarily .
  • This ruling of Supreme Court came as a major setback for Left Democratic Front government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who transferred Senkumar to the Kerala Police Housing and Construction Ltd and instead appointed Lokanath Behara as the new DGP.
  • The court also set aside the rulings of the Central Administrative Tribunal and the Kerala High Court which were in favour of the Kerala Government.


Etihad appoints Robin Kamark as CEO of Airline Equity Partners

  • Etihad Aviation Group on 24 April 2017 appointed Robin Kamark as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Airline Equity Partners.
  • Kamark will take over the position from Bruno Matheu, who has held the role since May 2016.
  • Kamark will be responsible for leading and developing the Group’s minority equity investment strategy, which includes stakes in airberlin, Alitalia, Jet Airways, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Etihad Regional and Virgin Australia.

Haryana beat Kerala to win team championship at National Youth Athletics Meet

  • Haryana on 23 April 2017 defeated Kerala to win the team championship at the National Youth Athletics Meet.
  • The National Youth Athletics Meet concluded at G.M.C. Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana. The meet saw the participation of about 505 athletes.
  • Haryana defeated arch rivals Kerala after six years to grab the trophy.
  • Haryana emerged champions with overall 166.5 points including girls and boys performance. Kerala finished as runners-up managing 134.75 points.


101-year-old Man Kaur bags gold in 100m event at World Masters Games


  • Indian sprinter Man Kaur on 24 April 2017 clinched the 100 metres sprint at the World Masters Games held in Auckland, New Zealand.
  • Kaur was the lone contender in the 100-years-and-over event, which she completed in a minute and 14 seconds. The 101-year old contestant was almost 1min 4sec short of the women's world record for the distance.
  • The Chandigarh-based sprinter will also compete in the 200m race on 26 April 2017. She has also registered to take part in the shot put and javelin throw events.



World News –

Cuba and Morocco re-establish diplomatic ties after 37 years


  • Cuba and Morocco in the third week of April 2017 signed an agreement to re-establish diplomatic ties after a gap of 37 years.
  • The announcement was made by the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
  • The agreement, which states "Guided by the mutual will to develop friendly relations, the two governments agreed to reestablish ties as well as political, economic and cultural cooperation," was signed by the two countries' envoys to the United Nations in New York.
  • Morocco's King Mohamed VI has already ordered the opening of an embassy in Havana. Cuba is one of the few Latin American countries where Rabat was not represented to date.
  • After Cuba’s diplomatic reestablishment with Morocco, South Korea, Somalia and Israel are the only remaining countries that do not have any ties with the Latin American nation.


Ghana, Kenya and Malawi to take part in WHO malaria vaccine pilot programme

  • The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) announced on 24 April 2017 that Ghana, Kenya and Malawi will take part in a WHO-coordinated pilot implementation programme.
  • The programme will make the world’s first malaria vaccine available in selected areas, beginning in 2018.
  • The injectable vaccine, RTS,S, was developed to protect young children from the most deadly form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
  • The vaccine will be assessed in the pilot programme as a complementary malaria control tool that could potentially be added to the core package of WHO-recommended measures for malaria prevention.

World Malaria Day 2017 observed globally

  • World Malaria Day (WMD) 2017 was observed globally on 25 April 2017 with the theme Malaria prevention: let’s close the gap. With this theme, WHO is calling the countries together for closing the gap in malaria prevention.
  • As per the World Malaria Report 2016, the rate of new malaria cases fell by 21 per cent globally between 2010 and 2015.
  • Malaria death rates fell by 29 per cent in the same 5-year period.
  • In sub-Saharan Africa, case incidence and death rates fell by 21 per cent and 31 per cent respectively.
