  1. The Odisha government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the lives of small farmers and promote inclusive agricultural transformation in the state.
  2. India on 21 April 2017 won the elections to two subsidiary bodies of a United Nations (UN) Organisations.  These two organisations are Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) and International Narcotics Control Board.
  3. The First Indian-Indonesia Energy Forum was held on 20 April 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal and Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan participated in the forum.
  4. The International Mother Earth Day was observed on 22 April 2017 across the world. The theme for the year is Environmental & Climate Literacy.

Odisha inks MoU to improve lives of small farmers


  • The Odisha government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the lives of small farmers and promote inclusive agricultural transformation in the state.
  • The MoU was signed by Hari Ballav Mishra, Director of Agriculture and Food Production, and Nick Austin, Director of Agricultural Development, at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik hoped the step would bring improvement in the livelihood of small and marginal farmers.


India wins elections to two UN subsidiary bodies

  • India on 21 April 2017 won the elections to two subsidiary bodies of a United Nations (UN) Organisations.
  • These two organisations are Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) and International Narcotics Control Board.  
  • India, along with 12 other members, was elected for the period of three years to the Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC), a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • On the other hand, India, along with 19 other nations, was also elected by acclamation to the International Narcotics Control Board for a four-year term period  beginning January 2018.

1st India-Indonesia Energy Forum held in Jakarta


  • The First Indian-Indonesia Energy Forum was held on 20 April 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal and Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan participated in the forum.
  • The Energy Forum was preceded by 2nd Joint Working Group (JWG) on Oil and Gas, 4th Joint Working Group on Coal and 1st Joint Working Group on New and Renewable Energy.
  • The reports of three Joint Working Groups were presented to two Ministers during the Energy Forum.
  • The 2nd JWG on Oil and Gas discussed the policy framework of India and Indonesia, oil and gas infrastructure development, cooperation opportunities in capacity building and business opportunities in oil and gas sector in both countries.
  • Representatives of major Indian companies in oil and gas sector, such as ONCG Videsh Limited, Petronet LNG Limited, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) participated in the JWG.

International Mother Earth Day 2017 observed across the world


  • The International Mother Earth Day was observed on 22 April 2017 across the world.
  • The theme for the year is Environmental & Climate Literacy. This year's theme highlights the fact that education is the foundation for progress. The world today needs a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to the earth. In addition, environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs.
  • The International Mother Earth Day recognises that the Earth and its ecosystems provide its inhabitants with life and sustenance.
