1. SBI and Magicbricks are launching the “Seal the Deal” campaign. Under Seal The Deal, SBI and Magicbricks will be hosting a mega online property show for SBI Approved Projects. This will be the first housing carnival in the industry at this scale.

2. Paytm has received final approval of the Reserve Bank to formally launch its payments bank and it expects to start operations next month. Payments banks can accept deposits from individuals and small businesses up to Rs 1 lakh per account.

3. Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has tied up with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) for augmenting capital support to enterprises in the country. The idea behind tying up with the state-run insurance behemoth is to give a boost to the venture capital ecosystem for MSMEs.

5. Japan has decided to associate itself with the development of Chennai, Varanasi and Ahmedabad as smart cities. As per the plan, every city will receive Center’s assistance of Rs 200 crore in the first year and Rs 100 crore over the three subsequent financial years. The Government plans to transform about 100 cities by 2019-20.

6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 January 2016 announced that the government is planning to launch Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana to train Indian youth for overseas employment. The announcement was made at the inauguration of the 14th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

7. India and Portugal on 7 January 2017 signed seven agreements to boost the bilateral relations between the two nations. The signed agreements include support in defence cooperation and renewable energy.

8. The 16th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) was held on 5 January 2017 in New Delhi. The major issues discussed in the meeting are non-performance assets (NPAs) of banks, steps taken to improve financial literacy, the status of financial inclusion measures and problems and opportunities associated with financial technology.

Kerala has been pegged as a ‘Destination to Watch’ in 2017 by one of the UK’s largest and most influential body of travel agents and tour operators. ‘God’s Own Country’ is the only Indian entry in the list of 12 tourist hotspots brought out by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA). The list, featured in ABTA’s ‘Travel Trends Report 2017’, has Kerala in the eighth spot — higher than premier destinations like the US, South Africa and Vietnam.

12. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and French Space agency (CNES) on 9 January 2017 signed a Partnership Agreement for satellite launch technology. Moreover, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall also signed an agreement with Rahul Narayan for equipping Axiom Research Lab's lunar rover with two latest-generation CASPEX micro-cameras which was developed by CNES in partnership with French firm 3DPlus.

14. The Union government of India has launched a Swachh Bharat survey in 500 cities and towns across the country to assess levels of sanitation and the progress made towards achieving ‘Open Defecation Free’ status. The Swachh Survekshan-2017, conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI), aims to improve sanitation standards in the country by instilling a sense of competition between the cities.
