  • Corporation Bank and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Mangaluru on Monday for implementing ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana’ (PMJJBY), the central government’s scheme to bring the entire nation under the ambit of insurance coverage.
  • Under PMJJBY, Corporation Bank’s Aadhar-linked savings account holders will be eligible for life insurance up to 2 lakh for a premium of 330 (plus service tax) per annum.
  • According to the press release, a master policy under ‘Group Insurance Scheme’, which is voluntary for the customers, will be issued by LIC. The eligible age of the customer shall be between 18 years and 50 years. Enrolment period will be from first June to August 31 2015 or as extended by the Govt, it said.
  • SK Roy, Chairman of LIC of India, awarded a trophy to Corporation Bank. The bank release said that the trophy was awarded to the bank for becoming number one in premium collection under bancassurance business.
  • The bank’s premium collection for the current year has crossed 170 crore. The release said that the bank is targeting to collect premium of more than 500 crore in 2015-16.
  • SK Roy, Chairman of LIC of India, and SR Bansal, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, attended the programme in Mangaluru on Monday.

Max Life, Lakshmi Vilas Bank in bancassurance pact

  • Max Life Insurance and Lakshmi Vilas Bank have entered into a 5 year bancassurance tie-up for distribution of the former’s life insurance products through the 400 branches of the private sector bank.
  • Under this alliance, Lakshmi Vilas Bank has become a corporate agent for Max Life Insurance and will offer a complete bouquet of life insurance solutions and post sales services to its customers.
  • The tie up will help Max Life Insurance reach out to an additional 25 lakh customers of the Karur-headquartered bank and strengthen its multi-channel distribution channel, primarily in the southern region, where Lakshmi Vilas Bank has a strong presence. Currently, over 20% of the new business for Max Life comes from South India. Of the total 400 branches of Lakshmi Vilas Bank, as many as 320 are located in South India.
  • Lakshmi Vilas Bank, which started distributing financial products from 2002-03 to increase its fee-based income, is looking at the alliance to enhance the insurance product bouquet.

Russia, Australia, Netherlands to join AIIB

  • A late surge among top European countries, including Germany, France, Britain, and now Russia along with Australia to join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), has imparted a new sense of realism to Beijing’s Silk Road plans.
  • If implemented, they are likely to shift the global balance of economic power towards Eurasia.
  • On Saturday, Russia, Australia and the Netherlands, announced its decision to join the China-led AIIB. The decision of key European powers along with South Korea to join the bank, overriding strong objections from the United States, has split the Atlantic Alliance on this issue.
  • The AIIB’s apparent success has now brought into sharper focus China’s ‘One belt One Road’ initiative which requires massive investment, including finance from the $40 billion Silk Road fund, which the Chinese have separately established.
  • In order to ensure that there are no funding shortfalls, an action plan released on Saturday by the Chinese government has asked countries along the Belt and Road to ensure that currency swap arrangements for payments are encouraged, and a bond market in Asia is fully developed.

Short Note - PRAGATI - Platform for Redressal of Grievances

Hello and welcome to ExamPundit. Here is a short not on PRAGATI - multi-purpose and multi-modal platform for Redressal of Grievances.

Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi launched his ambitious multi-purpose and multi-modal platform PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance And Timely Implementation).

PRAGATI is a unique integrating and interactive platform. The platform is aimed at addressing common man’s grievances, and simultaneously monitoring and reviewing important programmes and projects of the Government of India as well as projects flagged by State Governments.

The PRAGATI platform uniquely bundles three latest technologies: Digital data management, video-conferencing and geo-spatial technology. It also offers a unique combination in the direction of cooperative federalism since it brings on one stage the Secretaries of Government of India and the Chief Secretaries of the States.

With this, the Prime Minister is able to discuss the issues with the concerned Central and State officials with full information and latest visuals of the ground level situation. It is also an innovative project in e-governance and good governance.

Key features of the PRAGATI application are as follows:

  • It is a three-tier system (PMO, Union Government Secretaries, and Chief Secretaries of the States);
  • Prime Minister will hold a monthly programme where he will interact with the Government of India Secretaries, and Chief Secretaries through Video-conferencing enabled by data and geo-informatics visuals;
  • The first such programme was launched on 25th March, 2015 (Wednesday) at 3.30 PM;
  • Now onwards, it will be held once in every month on Fourth Wednesday at 3.30 PM-to be known as PRAGATI Day.
  • Issues to be flagged before the PM are picked up from the available database regarding Public Grievances, on-going Programmes and pending Projects;
  • The system will ride on, strengthen and re-engineer the data bases of the CPGRAMS for grievances, Project Monitoring Group (PMG) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. PRAGATI provides an interface and platform for all these three aspects.
  • It will also take into consideration various correspondences to PM’s office by the common people or from high dignitaries of States and/or developers of public projects;
  • The issues flagged are uploaded seven days prior to the PRAGATI day (i.e. on third Wednesday of every month).
  • These issues can be viewed by the Union Government Secretaries and Chief Secretaries after entering into the application;
  • User ID and Password for each of the Union Government Secretaries and Chief Secretaries have been created and made available;
  • Union Government Secretaries and Chief Secretaries will be able to see the issues pertaining to their Department /State;
  • Union Government Secretaries and Chief Secretaries have to put their comments and updates about the flagged issues within three days (i.e. by next Monday);
  • One day - Tuesday is available to the PMO team to review the data entered by the Union Government Secretaries and Chief Secretaries;
  • The design is such, that when PM reviews the issue he should have on his screen the issue as well as the latest updates and visuals regarding the same;

The system has been designed in-house by the PMO team with the help of National Informatics Center (NIC). As the name suggests, it is aimed at starting a culture of Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation. It is also a robust system for bringing e-transparency and e-accountability with real-time presence and exchange among the key stakeholders.
